So What Do You Do on Monday — What Is Controllable Within Ninety Days

Where the Series Landed

Across nine posts the message came down to one thing: nobody knows how this plays out. Part 1 separated confident reassurance and confident warning as two versions of the same sentence, and everything after that looked at what can be done from inside not knowing.

So one question remains. What do you do on Monday morning.

This post makes no new argument. All it does is fold the previous nine into something you can act on.

Sorting Into Three Columns

Start by sorting. Write down what is pressing on you right now and put each item in one of three columns.

  • What I can change. Things whose state is different after one action today. The runway number, the record, contact outside the company, reading practice.
  • What I can only influence. Things where my actions move the probability a little but do not set the outcome. The next promotion, whether this project succeeds, the team's reputation.
  • What I cannot control. The direction of the industry, the company's financial decisions, the temperature of the hiring market, the next step of the technology.

Most career worry sits in the third column and gets handled with first-column energy. That is why it exhausts you and nothing moves. The purpose of sorting is not to ignore the third column but to make visible how much is being spent there.

What Is Controllable Within Ninety Days

These are the items that actually belong in the first column. All have appeared in the series; what is added here is an order.

  • First two weeks — two numbers. Immediately usable cash and required monthly spending. Thirty minutes, and the size of the worry becomes finite. Part 8
  • First month — three lines of raw log. What you owned this quarter and what you solved how. The resume can wait. Part 4
  • Sixty days — three people outside. Reach out without asking for anything. And start building one link that stays outside the company.
  • Ninety days — one sentence. Write down what your vertical stroke is. If the sentence will not come, that is next quarter's assignment. Part 6
  • Ninety days — the shelf-life table. Sort the ten things you currently count as valuable into the three layers. Part 7
  • Ongoing — once a day. Read code that is not yours and write down three places that bother you. Ten minutes is enough. Part 5
  • Two hours a week — outside the company. One activity you are not evaluated on. Part 9
  • What not to do at night. Conclusions about your career are morning business. Part 2

The list looks long, but most items ask for an hour or less. Time has been the problem less often than order has.

Two at a Time

Try to do this whole list in one quarter and you will fail. And the failure mode is a bad one: not having kept the list becomes a new source of anxiety.

So one rule is worth adopting. Pick two for this quarter. Write the rest into next quarter's list and close the file. The selection criterion is not interest but emptiness. Fill whichever slot has been empty longest.

And use the completion declaration from Part 4 here too. When the two are done, write that this quarter's preparation is finished and put the next review date in the calendar. Any worry that surfaces in between can be answered with the fact that it was received and has a date.

Criteria for Letting Go

Letting go of what you cannot control is a procedure, not an attitude. Three questions cover it.

  • What action of mine changes this. If there is one, it belongs in the first column. Do it.
  • If I cannot change it, can I prepare for it. You cannot change the direction of the industry, but you can build a runway. When preparation is possible, the preparation becomes the item and the original worry closes.
  • If I cannot even prepare. Then it is not in the domain of solving but the domain of bearing.

Bearing is not the same as giving up. Giving up accepts the outcome in advance; bearing decides not to spend resources there. And bearing is not permanent. Write down a date to look again. When conditions change, the item moves into the first column.

The pain that comes from comparison runs through the same procedure. Other people's timetables are an uncontrollable item; translating your own envy into one line is a controllable one. That distinction is covered in Part 3.

On the Uncertainty That Remains

Let me end honestly.

None of the items above guarantees safety. People with eight months of runway get laid off. People who have practiced reading still take a long time when hiring is frozen. There is exactly one thing this list guarantees: whichever way the prediction turns out, none of it was a loss.

That is the best available criterion under uncertainty — choosing actions that hold their value when you are wrong, instead of trying to be right.

And that returns to where the series began. The goal was never to recover certainty. It was to become able to choose the next step without it. The step is walkable even while the anxiety stays. It is also how most people are actually doing it.

When This Advice Does Not Apply

If you have already received notice or are out of work, a ninety-day plan is a luxury. The order is different there: check the cash position, confirm the eligibility and timing of anything you can claim, and reach out. You have to move in units of this week rather than ninety days, and only the first two of the four slots in this series apply.

And this list is not a treatment for anxiety. If sleep has been broken for weeks or daily life is not holding together, what is needed is a different tool, not a checklist.

Finally, if you read this list and want to do none of it, that is information too. It may not be that your preparation is lacking; it may be that this is a stretch in which you need to recover. Then it is better to close the list and open it again next quarter.
