Preparing for Layoffs in Practice — A Checklist, Not a Feeling

Worry Is Not Preparation

When layoff news moves through the industry, most people do one of two things: refresh the news and the forums, or work hard at not thinking about it. Both are states, not actions.

The good thing about preparation is that it ends. Worry has no completion condition; preparation does. The items are fixed, and once you fill them you do not have to open the file again until next quarter. The goal of this post is to build that completion condition.

One honest note before starting. None of this prevents a layoff. Large reductions are usually decided at a level unrelated to individual performance. What preparation changes is not the probability of receiving the notice but the number of options you hold the morning after. That alone is worth the hour.

Slot One — Financial Runway

The first slot to fill and the one most often empty.

You need two numbers: how much cash you can use immediately, and how much must leave your account every month. Divide the first by the second and you have your runway in months. The arithmetic is one division, but plenty of people do not know either number — and while they do not know, the size of the worry stays infinite.

The details of the calculation and how to work on fixed costs get their own treatment in Part 8. Only one thing matters here: runway is a money problem and a leverage problem at the same time. Someone holding two months and someone holding eight make different decisions in front of the same offer.

Slot Two — Documents You Can Produce at Any Time

The day you are told is not a day on which you can accurately recall the last three years. Try to reconstruct your accomplishments in that cognitive state and less than half of what you actually did will surface.

So what you need is not a finished resume but a raw log. Make one file and add three lines each quarter: what you owned, what problem you solved and how, and what the result can be verified by. Numbers where numbers exist, checkable facts where they do not. No polish required. The raw log is not written to be read; it is written for a later version of you.

The resume itself only needs attention about twice a year. How to shape it is covered in Principles of a Resume That Gets Read.

There is one line here that must be respected. What lives inside company accounts is not yours. Internal documents, code, and customer material lose their access the day you leave, and extracting them in advance is not preparation but an incident. Preparation is not collecting company assets; it is holding your own record in a form that is not a company asset. A raw log is a description of what you accomplished, not a copy of the material.

Slot Three — A Network You Do Not Build in an Emergency

The value of a network is set by the date of last contact, not the number of people. Reach out after three years and it is a favor; talk to someone you spoke with two months ago and it is a conversation. Same person, same question, different result.

The maintenance cost is smaller than it looks. Contacting about three people per quarter is enough. The trick is contacting them without asking for anything: a note that you read what they wrote, one thing you learned recently that might be useful to them, one line about how you are. A message that gives something lowers the threshold for the next one.

And do not underestimate the internal network. The people you work with now are, a few years from now, hiring managers and referrers at other companies. A reputation earned in the work travels harder than any resume. This is not advice to play politics; it is the observation that how your colleagues remember you is a real asset.

Slot Four — Evidence That Lives Outside the Company

The most postponed slot, and the hardest to build after the notice arrives.

Be precise about the purpose. It is not to become known. It is to create one link by which someone outside your company can confirm what you know. The form does not matter: one technical post, a small open source contribution, an internal talk reworked for an outside audience, a small tool in a public repository.

Specificity matters more than volume. Good evidence does not say "I know this field"; it says "I solved this problem this way and got this part wrong." The second kind is hard to imitate and gives a reader material to judge with.

How to accumulate this is covered further in Turning a Side Project Into a Career Asset. One point deserves emphasis here: when this slot is filled, the first step of a job search changes from persuasion into verification.

One Hour a Quarter, Then Close the Worry

You do not need to look at the four slots daily. Doing so is the problem. Continuous monitoring is not preparation; it is worry in another costume.

Once a quarter, take an hour and check: how many months is the runway; did the last quarter's three lines make it into the raw log; have you spoken with three people outside the company in the last three months; is there one more thing outside the company than there was last quarter.

Then comes the step that matters most. When the review is done, declare this quarter's preparation finished. This is not ceremony. The defining feature of anxiety is that it has no completion signal, and unless you manufacture one, preparation never ends. Put the next review date in the calendar and you can answer any worry that surfaces in between with: this was received, and it has a date.

People who have prepared are less anxious not because the risk went away. It is because they know they already did the part that was theirs to do.
