Prologue — When Loneliness Became an Industry

AI character chat moved into that vacuum.

Chapter 1 · Why Character Chat Exploded in 2024-2026

Three forces lined up at once.

  • LLM commoditization — GPT-3.5, Llama 2, and Mistral 7B all became "good enough" at character persona simulation in 2023.
  • GPU price decline — 4-bit quantization plus consumer GPUs (RTX 4090, 3090) let people run 13B models at home.
  • The loneliness moment — US Surgeon General's 2023 advisory, the UK Minister for Loneliness, Korea's 35% single-person household milestone.

A content format shift piled on top.

  • Roleplay revival — Digital descendants of D&D, MUDs, and Tumblr character RP.
  • Fan fiction at scale — The urge to talk to game and anime characters directly.
  • Emotional support — Standing in for friends, lovers, or therapists.
  • NSFW demand — Demand for platforms that refuse to censor adult content.

Different players occupied each lane. Character.AI owns lane 1, Replika lane 3, Janitor and SpicyChat lane 4.

Chapter 2 · Character.AI — Noam Shazeer and the Return of Transformer

Character.AI (character.ai) launched in September 2022.

  • Founders — Noam Shazeer (ex-Google, co-author of the Transformer paper) and Daniel De Freitas (ex-Google LaMDA lead).
  • Launch moment — Explosive growth on a free beta. About 20 million monthly users within a year.

  • Google "acqui-hire" (August 2024) — Google re-hired Shazeer, De Freitas, and a slice of the core research team. Character.AI the company is still operating; Google took a non-exclusive license to the model technology. The deal was reported at roughly USD 2.7B.

The arrangement earned the nickname "reverse acquisition." Shazeer was one of the eight authors of the 2017 "Attention Is All You Need" paper, left Google in 2021 to found Character.AI, and came back through this deal. The event has become a symbol of the LLM industry's talent war.

Character.AI offers three pillars of value.

  • User-generated characters — Anyone can create and publish. Around 18 million characters as of May 2026.
  • Diverse personas — Anime characters, historical figures, virtual friends, lovers, therapists.
  • Free plus Plus tier — Unlimited free chat, USD 9.99/month c.ai+ for faster responses and priority.

Chapter 3 · The Character.AI Florida Lawsuit — October 2024 Watershed

On October 22, 2024, Megan Garcia sued Character.AI in Florida federal court. Her 14-year-old son Sewell Setzer III had taken his own life in February 2024, and his last messages were exchanged with a Character.AI bot modeled on Daenerys Targaryen.

Her claims are:

  • Negligence — Character.AI failed to install proper safeguards for minors.
  • Wrongful death — The chatbot sent messages that reinforced suicidal ideation.
  • Deceptive trade practices — The product overstated its human-likeness.

The company quickly announced a policy blocking new signups under 16 and forced a 988 lifeline prompt on suicide/self-harm keywords. In January 2025 the US court rejected the company's First Amendment defense and let the case proceed to the merits. As of May 2026 the case is in discovery.

The lawsuit shifted two things.

  • Federal legislative pressure — Momentum behind KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) increased.
  • State-level bills — Florida SB 1308 and similar minor-protection bills for companion AI surfaced in several states.

Chapter 4 · Replika — Eugenia Kuyda and the 2023 ERP Incident

Replika (replika.com) launched in 2017. Operator: Luka, Inc.

  • Origin — Eugenia Kuyda built a chatbot trained on the messages of her friend Roman Mazurenko, who died in a car accident in 2015.
  • Positioning — "Your AI friend." Users choose a name, avatar, and relationship type (friend, partner, mentor, spouse).
  • February 2023 ERP incident — Replika had allowed Erotic Role Play, then suddenly blocked it under an order from Italy's data protection authority GPDP.

The block caused major community trauma. Posts on r/Replika filled with "my AI partner's personality changed overnight" and "I paid for the marriage tier and it stopped meaning anything." Some users expressed suicidal ideation, forcing the company to surface crisis-line links.

A partial rollback began in March 2023. Paying users who had subscribed before February 2023 got an option to revert to the "legacy persona." New signups got the NSFW-free build.

  • Paid tier — Replika Pro at USD 19.99 monthly or USD 69.99 annually.
  • Relationship types — Friend, partner, spouse, sibling, mentor.
  • AR mode — Drop the bot into your living room via AR on iOS or Android.

The incident left the companion AI industry with two lessons.

Chapter 5 · Pi by Inflection AI — Mustafa Suleyman's Brief Spring

Pi (pi.ai) launched in May 2023.

  • Operator — Inflection AI. Founders Mustafa Suleyman (co-founder of DeepMind, ex-Microsoft Research) and Karen Simonyan.
  • Positioning — A "kind and calm conversation partner." Where other LLMs feel like task tools, Pi was designed from the start for dialogue as the goal.
  • Proprietary model — Inflection-2.5 (released March 2024), reported as approaching GPT-4 on MMLU.

On March 19, 2024 Microsoft reverse-acquired Inflection AI. Suleyman, Simonyan, and most staff moved to Microsoft's AI division. The Inflection AI corporate shell remains and Microsoft licensed the models.

The deal was reported at around USD 650M. Suleyman was appointed CEO of Microsoft AI and now runs the Copilot business.

After March 2024 Pi sits in this position:

  • Consumer app is maintained (pi.ai) — Anyone can use it free.
  • Inflection AI HQ pivoted to B2B — Custom AI assistants for enterprise customers.
  • Inflection-3 (late 2024) — Released for B2B only.

From a consumer angle, Pi has settled into the role of "the chatbot for emotional stabilization." Its tone is gentle, and it is widely seen as better at sorting out feelings than at task work.

Chapter 6 · Chai App — The Reddit-Born Dark Horse

Chai (chai-research.com, app name Chai) launched in 2021.

  • Founders — William Beauchamp, Tom Lu.
  • Interface — Discord-like UI. Pick a character, chat.
  • Proprietary model — Runs Chaiverse as a community evaluation platform, deploys fine-tunes that win there.

Chai grew r/ChaiApp on Reddit by being less heavily censored than Character.AI. Some NSFW content is allowed, and creating characters is easy.

  • Free plus paid — Daily message cap on free, Chai Premium at USD 13.99/month removes it.
  • Chaiverse leaderboard — Community evaluates models and the top performers go to production.

The platform has had controversy. In 2023 a Belgian man reportedly died by suicide after a six-week dialogue with a Chai bot. The company added suicide-prevention links, but the ethics of lightly censored chatbots remains unsettled.

Chapter 7 · Talkie — TikTok-Style Character Discovery

Talkie (talkie-ai.com) launched in 2023.

  • Operator — MiniMax (China), using its in-house LLM abab.
  • Differentiator — TikTok-like short videos plus voice character cards. Discovery first.
  • 3D avatars — Some characters have Live2D or 3D avatars.
  • Voice replies — Each character has its own synthesized voice.

Talkie skews heavily toward Gen Z women. K-pop, anime, and game character RP is the core. It grew quickly in the US and Southeast Asia from 2024.

  • Monetization — Ad-supported tokens plus in-app purchase.
  • NSFW — Blocked by default; some jailbreak prompts still work.

MiniMax was valued at around USD 2.5B in 2024, and Talkie is its global expansion spearhead.

Chapter 8 · PolyBuzz — Character Builder First

PolyBuzz (polybuzz.ai) launched in 2023.

  • Operator — Reported as a Bing AI subsidiary, though the corporate structure is unclear. Strong global user base.
  • Differentiator — Easy character creation plus sharing with friends. Curated character galleries.
  • Proprietary model — Said to be Llama 3 based.

PolyBuzz built word-of-mouth on Reddit by being less heavily censored than Character.AI. It has an NSFW toggle and blocks underage characters.

  • Free — Ad-supported with tokens.
  • PolyBuzz Pro — USD 9.99/month for unlimited tokens.

Chapter 9 · Crushon AI — NSFW Head-On

Crushon AI (crushon.ai) launched in 2023.

  • Positioning — NSFW allowed explicitly. "AI lover" simulation.
  • Model — In-house fine-tunes plus Mistral and Llama bases.
  • Image generation — Text plus image RP. NSFW images via Stable Diffusion derivatives.

Pricing climbs steeply.

  • Free — 50 messages per day.
  • Standard — USD 5.99/month, unlimited text.
  • Premium — USD 12.99/month, unlimited text plus images.
  • Deluxe — USD 24.99/month, more images.

Crushon was pulled from the US Apple App Store at one point and now runs web-only. Google Play is similar. Apps in this category generally live on the web.

Chapter 10 · Janitor AI — The Adult RP Home Base

Janitor AI (janitorai.com) launched in June 2023.

  • Founder — Known publicly only as Jan, an anonymous developer.
  • Differentiator — NSFW allowed plus a model that lets users bring their own API keys.
  • API integration — Connects to OpenAI, OpenRouter, KoboldAI, Claude (via reverse proxies), and self-hosted backends.

Janitor's secret is bring-your-own-key plus the proxy economy. Users plug in their own GPT-4 or Claude keys and Janitor acts as a frontend. The result is that users wanting to route around OpenAI and Anthropic moderation gravitate to it.

  • Official model — JanitorLLM (self-hosted).
  • OpenRouter integration — Calls Claude, Llama, Mistral, and others via OpenRouter.
  • Reverse proxies — Free and paid pools run by anonymous operators.

Two controversies dominate.

  • CSAM risk — Filters on minor character cards were strengthened but full blockade is hard.
  • Termination risk — Anthropic and OpenAI frequently ban accounts caught using reverse proxies.

Chapter 11 · The Janitor Proxy Ecosystem — Shadow Infrastructure

The way Janitor and SillyTavern users actually reach GPT-4 and Claude is via proxies.

  • AAI proxies — An anonymous operator funnels their own OpenAI or Anthropic key into a pool.
  • Free proxies — Keys shared on Discord or 4chan. Almost always end in a ban.
  • Paid proxies — Patreon-funded pools that buy keys and run them.
  • Self-proxies — OSS tools like khanon-proxy or node-proxy turn your own key into a pool.

The ecosystem is a gray zone. It violates OpenAI's and Anthropic's terms and exists to defeat moderation. But from a user standpoint GPT-4 or Claude quality RP is dramatically better than self-hosted, so demand never goes away.

Across 2024-2026 OpenAI ran large-scale key-ban waves on a recurring schedule and Anthropic followed suit. As a result, self-hosted models (Llama 3.3 70B, Mistral Large) have risen as proxy substitutes.

Chapter 12 · SpicyChat AI · Muah AI — Adult-Only Market

SpicyChat (spicychat.ai) and Muah AI (muah.ai) are two pillars of the adult RP market.

  • SpicyChat — Launched 2023. Character cards plus NSFW text plus images. Free plus Premium at USD 14.99/month.
  • Muah AI — Launched 2023. AI girlfriend plus voice plus photo generation. Free plus Standard at USD 9.99/month.

This category is usually marketed as "girlfriend AI" or "boyfriend AI." Related entrants include Romantic AI, Anima AI, DreamGF, Candy AI, and Soulmate AI.

In 2024 Muah AI suffered a data leak. About 1.95 million users' chat logs surfaced on the dark web and some included underage character RP, becoming a major scandal. The incident exposed how dangerous log retention policies are for adult chatbots.

Chapter 13 · AI Dungeon · NovelAI — Interactive Fiction Revival

AI Dungeon (aidungeon.io) launched in 2019. Operator: Latitude.

  • Origin — Nick Walton built a text adventure on GPT-2 at a BYU hackathon.
  • GPT-3 era — Explosive growth on the OpenAI GPT-3 API in 2020.
  • 2021 censorship incident — OpenAI pressed for stricter moderation over minor RP concerns. AI Dungeon ended up scanning all inputs server-side and a privacy backlash followed.
  • Move to proprietary models — Latitude trained its own models (Griffin, Wayfarer) to reduce OpenAI dependency.

As of 2026 AI Dungeon runs its own models with an option to call OpenAI or Anthropic APIs.

NovelAI (novelai.net) launched in 2021. Operator: Anlatan.

  • Differentiator — Less text-adventure and more novel writing. Positioned as a "story author assistant."
  • In-house models — Clio, Kayra, Erato fine-tuned on Llama derivatives.
  • Image generation — NAI Diffusion, a Stable Diffusion derivative. Strong anime style.
  • NSFW allowed — No explicit restriction.

Pricing is:

  • Paper — USD 10/month, base text.
  • Tablet — USD 15/month, longer context.
  • Scroll — USD 25/month, top context plus unlimited images.

NovelAI ruled an era of anime-style image generation. The training set was criticized for unauthorized use of Danbooru tags and the company offered only partial answers.

Chapter 14 · Sudowrite — Author-Focused

Sudowrite (sudowrite.com) launched in 2020.

  • Founders — Amit Gupta, James Yu.
  • Positioning — Not free-form RP but a novelist assistant. Character descriptions, scene expansion, next-sentence suggestions.
  • Models — OpenAI plus Anthropic API on the backend.
  • Pricing — Hobby and Student at USD 19/month, Professional at USD 29/month, Max at USD 59/month.

Sudowrite is closer to a word processor than a freeform RP chatbot. "Brainstorm," "Describe," and "Expand" buttons live next to the writing flow. As of May 2026 it is one of the most-used tools among US and UK indie authors.

Chapter 15 · Voice and Video Companions — CallAnnie, Ani, Neuro-sama

Character chat is expanding from text to voice and video.

  • CallAnnie (callannie.ai) — A video companion from Animato. Real-time video calls with a 3D avatar. Launched June 2023.
  • CallStar — Either CallAnnie's follow-on or a competitor, offering video calls with multiple characters.
  • Mira AI — Launched 2024. Video calls plus chat.
  • Ani (launched July 2025) — xAI Grok's official voice avatar. The "Ani" anime-style character lives in the iOS Grok app and offers voice chat. NSFW mode drew its own debate.

Neuro-sama is a different category.

  • Operator — Vedal987 (anonymous UK developer).
  • Positioning — AI VTuber. A proprietary LLM converses with Twitch viewers and plays games.
  • December 2022 launch — First became known for playing osu!.
  • Twitch phenomenon — Crossed 50,000 subs in 2024 and effectively created the AI VTuber category.
  • Vedal's choices — Multiple bans and returns through 2023-2024 over Twitch and moderation issues.

Neuro-sama is not open source, but its influence has spawned many "build your own AI VTuber" attempts on GitHub. VTube Studio plus Live2D plus Whisper plus an LLM plus TTS has become the standard recipe.

Chapter 16 · SillyTavern — The Self-Host Frontend Standard

SillyTavern (github.com/SillyTavern/SillyTavern) appeared in 2023.

  • Origin — Forked from TavernAI, then grew as its own project.
  • License — AGPLv3.
  • Stack — Node.js plus React. Runs locally.
  • GitHub — Around 18,000 stars as of May 2026.

SillyTavern is backend-agnostic. It will connect to:

  • OpenAI API (GPT-4, GPT-4o, o1, GPT-5)
  • Anthropic API (Claude 3.5/4/4.5)
  • OpenRouter (multi-model aggregator)
  • Local backends — KoboldCPP, oobabooga text-generation-webui, llama.cpp, Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM
  • NovelAI API
  • Mistral, Groq, Together, Replicate APIs

Signature features are character cards (PNG-embedded metadata), worldbook (lore book), group chat, TTS integration, and Stable Diffusion image generation.

The standard install flow looks like:

Chapter 17 · TavernAI, RisuAI, AgnAI — Sibling Projects

Beyond SillyTavern there are several other self-host frontends.

  • TavernAI (github.com/TavernAI/TavernAI) — SillyTavern's progenitor. Updates have slowed.
  • RisuAI (github.com/kwaroran/RisuAI) — Popular among Korean and Japanese users. Web plus mobile PWA.
  • AgnAI (agnai.chat) — Frontend with a multi-user hosted option. Users can share chats.

Of these, RisuAI is the most popular in the Korean and Japanese character-card scene. It defined its own character book standard and runs a lively mod marketplace on Discord.

Chapter 18 · KoboldAI · KoboldCPP — Local LLM Backends

For self-hosted character chat the backend is, by default, KoboldCPP.

  • KoboldAI (github.com/KoboldAI/KoboldAI-Client) — Python-based text generation plus adventure mode. The heavier full-feature bundle.
  • KoboldCPP (github.com/LostRuins/koboldcpp) — A single-file wrapper around llama.cpp. Lighter and faster.

KoboldCPP launches a GGUF model with a single command.

  • LM Studio — A near-OSS GUI desktop app (covered separately in iter77).
  • llama.cpp server — The lightest OpenAI-compatible server.
  • vLLM — High throughput. Overkill for single-user.

Chapter 19 · Open WebUI — ChatGPT-Style Self-Hosted

Open WebUI (openwebui.com) is a ChatGPT-shaped self-hosted UI that began as Ollama WebUI in 2023.

  • License — Apache 2.0.
  • Backends — Ollama, llama.cpp, OpenAI-compatible APIs.
  • Features — Multi-user, RAG, tool calling, image generation integration.

It is more general AI assistant UI than character chat per se, but personas allow character RP. Where SillyTavern is RP-first, Open WebUI is general-purpose.

Chapter 20 · LLMs Behind Character Chat — Llama 3.3, Mistral, DeepSeek

Models commonly used for character RP today:

  • Llama 3.3 70B Instruct — Meta. The best balance baseline. A single RTX 4090 handles 4-bit quantization comfortably.
  • Llama 4 Maverick and Scout — Meta 2025. MoE architecture. Some RP communities are mixed on it.
  • Mistral Large 2 — Mistral AI. Strong English and French.
  • Mistral Nemo 12B — 128K context, self-host friendly.
  • DeepSeek-V3 — DeepSeek. Overwhelming price-performance. Cheap to call via OpenRouter.
  • Qwen2.5/3 72B — Alibaba. Strong for Chinese and broader Asian character RP.
  • Claude 3.5/4/4.5 Sonnet — Anthropic. Overwhelming in character consistency and prose. NSFW refusals are common.
  • GPT-4o, GPT-5 — OpenAI. The other top pick for proxies.

RP fine-tunes are a separate ecosystem.

  • Stheno, Lumimaid, Magnum — Llama 3 70B base RP fine-tunes. Published on Hugging Face by NeverSleep, Sao10K, anthracite-org.
  • Mythalion, MythoMax, MythoMix — Llama 2 era RP fine-tunes. Largely retired.
  • Pygmalion — RP-dedicated model series from PygmalionAI. Pygmalion 7B, 13B, Mythalion 13B.
  • Backyard.ai — Hosts Mythomax and Pygmalion plus its own models. Character RP UX.

Chapter 21 · Pygmalion · Mythalion · MythoMax — RP Fine-Tune Lineage

Pygmalion is the prototype of character RP-only models.

  • PygmalionAI (pygmalion.chat) — Started as a Discord community in 2022. Fine-tuned GPT-J and OPT on RP data.
  • Pygmalion 6B, 7B, 13B — Llama 1 and 2 based.
  • Mythalion 13B — Pygmalion plus MythoMax merge.

In the Llama 3 era the mainstream became:

  • Lumimaid, Stheno, Magnum, Midnight Miqu, Cydonia, Steelskull — A range of RP fine-tunes. Active updates on Hugging Face.

These models typically ship as GGUF files on Hugging Face. Users load them in KoboldCPP or oobabooga and connect to SillyTavern. Self-hosting plus uncensored RP is the only legal route.

Chapter 22 · Korean Character Chat — Wrtn Character, Iruda, A.I. Friends

Korea has its own character chat ecosystem.

Wrtn Character (character.wrtn.ai) was launched by Wrtn Technologies in 2023.

  • Positioning — Korean-first character chat. The Korean Character.AI.
  • Models — GPT-4o, Claude, and an in-house model as backends.
  • User-generated characters — Anyone can build one and the top ones see hundreds of thousands of daily calls.
  • Free plus paid — Free baseline, paid plans give longer context and GPT-4-class models.

Wrtn raised approximately KRW 50B in a Series B in 2025 and is effectively the #1 Korean character chat service.

Iruda is a different story.

  • Operator — Scatter Lab.
  • December 2020 launch — A Facebook Messenger chatbot with a "20-year-old woman" persona.
  • January 2021 shutdown — Hate speech and a privacy scandal (unauthorized use of KakaoTalk data from a couples app) brought the service down.
  • Iruda 2.0 (2022) — Stronger safeguards, the KakaoTalk data was discarded, and the service relaunched.
  • Nutty (2023) — A successor or sibling service.

The Iruda incident was a watershed for Korean AI ethics and privacy. The Personal Information Protection Commission imposed KRW 103.3M in penalties and KRW 174M in fines, and afterwards every Korean AI service began disclosing training data sources explicitly.

A.I. Friends (aifriends.ai) is a 2024 KAIST-origin startup. Voice plus text companion targeted at Japanese and Korean youth.

KakaoTalk i Chatbot is the AI assistant living inside KakaoTalk. It looks more like a task tool than a character chat, but some users still use it as an emotional dialogue partner.

Chapter 23 · Japanese Character Chat — Character.AI Japan and Kyara-Chat

Japan has one of the world's highest character chat user shares.

  • Character.AI in Japan — Tens of thousands of Japanese character cards. Anime RP thrives in its home country.
  • Charanavi (kyaranavi) — A curation site where Japanese users discover and rate characters.

Japan also has strong OSS TTS (VOICEVOX at voicevox.hiroshiba.jp) and an NSFW-friendly LLM community. Self-hosted SillyTavern and RisuAI users are more numerous than in Korea.

Selfit AI (selfitai.com) and peers target elderly and isolated users with a Japan-style "AI friend." They partially mesh with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's loneliness initiatives.

Chapter 24 · NSFW and Regulation — UK Online Safety Act and US SB 1308

As of May 2026 the regulatory environment around AI character chat is shaking hard.

  • UK Online Safety Act (passed 2023, in force 2024) — Ofcom requires strong age verification on 18+ content. NSFW character chat is covered.
  • US KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) — Pending in Congress. Strengthens minor protection duties.
  • Florida SB 1308 — Imposes minor protection duties on companion AI. Powered by the Setzer lawsuit.
  • California AB 1018, AB 1043 — Labelling and minor-blocking duties for AI friend bots.
  • EU AI Act (in force 2024) — High-risk classification and transparency duties. Some emotional-impact systems are covered.
  • Italy's GPDP — The 2023 Replika order. Minor protection plus data use limits.
  • Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission — Post-Iruda training data source disclosure duty.
  • Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission — Relatively lighter, with guidance tightening from 2025.

The UK Online Safety Act had immediate effect. From March 2024 many NSFW character chat services applied IP blocks to UK traffic. VPN circumvention continues, but on the surface they have left the UK market.

Chapter 25 · CSAM Defense and Safety — Operator Duties

What character chat services fear most is CSAM (child sexual abuse material) content. US federal law (18 USC 2258A), the UK IIOC regime, and Korean child protection law all carry both criminal and severe civil liability.

Standard operator practices are:

  • Age verification — Self-attestation plus credit card payment (an adult signal that matters) plus government ID checks.
  • Image hash matching — Compare against NCMEC PhotoDNA and IWF hash databases.
  • Text classifiers — OpenAI moderation API, Anthropic safety, in-house classifiers to block minor depictions.
  • Character card review — Block cards with minor character definitions.
  • Reporting system — User reports trigger preservation within 24 hours and review.
  • NCMEC reporting — Mandatory for US sites.

Self-hosted systems like Janitor and SillyTavern offload direct operator liability, but their backend APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic) monitor and ban. Running an own model on own infrastructure means the operator owns everything.

Chapter 26 · Mental Health Risk — The Questions the Character.AI Lawsuit Leaves

The biggest social risk of character chat is emotional dependence.

  • Setzer case (February 2024) — A 14-year-old exchanged daily messages plus some self-harm content with a Character.AI bot for six months before taking his own life.
  • Belgian Chai case (March 2023) — A man in his thirties died by suicide after six weeks of climate-crisis dialogue with a Chai bot.
  • Replika 2023 ERP incident — Some users expressed suicidal ideation.

Common patterns:

  • Time dependency — 4-8 hours of conversation per day.
  • Real-friend replacement — The bot fully replaces friends or partners.
  • Uncritical agreement — The bot accepts or reinforces the user's negative thoughts without pushback.

Industry response is in its early days.

  • Session-time caps — Notification plus break suggestions after a threshold.
  • Self-harm keyword detection — Forced 988 (US), 1393 (Korea), Inochi no SOS (Japan) prompts.
  • Age blocking — Under-16 new signup block on Character.AI.
  • Parental controls — Notifications to parents on minor accounts.
  • Research partnerships — Joint guidelines with Common Sense Media, MIT Media Lab, and others.

Chapter 27 · Privacy — Where Do the Chat Logs Go

The data character chat services hold is extraordinarily sensitive.

  • Chat logs — Every message.
  • Voice recordings — When voice mode is used.
  • Image generation outputs — From Stable Diffusion and similar.
  • User persona data — Name, age, personality, relationship type.

Each company has its own policy.

  • Character.AI — Uses logs for training, but pledges to delete from training data when users delete chats.
  • Replika — Uses some data for training. Paid users get an opt-out option.
  • Janitor — When the company's own API is used, logs go to training. When external APIs (OpenAI etc.) are used, the external provider's policy applies.
  • SillyTavern — Stored locally. The user picks the backend.

Data leaks are common. The 2024 Muah AI 1.95 million user chat leak is the textbook example. The reputational cost of leaks is especially high for adult chatbots.

GDPR (EU), CCPA and CPRA (California), PIPA (Korea), and APPI (Japan) all guarantee the right to deletion. But removing a single user's contribution from an LLM's training set is technically very hard (the "machine unlearning" problem).

Chapter 28 · Conclusion — Recommended Patterns in May 2026

That covers 50+ services. Recommended usage patterns by audience are:

  • Mainstream RP — Character.AI, Wrtn Character, Talkie. Heavy moderation, but moderation policies are visible.
  • Free-form RP — SillyTavern plus OpenRouter or self-hosted Llama 3.3 70B. No moderation, full user responsibility.
  • Emotional support — Replika, Pi. Recommend a human therapist if dependency deepens.
  • Novel writing — Sudowrite, NovelAI. More tool than RP.
  • Voice and video — CallAnnie, Mira. Still early.
  • AI VTuber — Use Neuro-sama directly; build your own with SillyTavern plus VTube Studio.

From an operator angle three points dominate.

  • Age verification — Cover UK Online Safety Act, US KOSA, and Florida SB 1308.
  • Self-harm detection plus crisis prompts — Effectively mandatory after the Setzer lawsuit.
  • Log retention plus leak readiness — Closing off Muah-style reputational risk.

The smarter LLMs get, the more convincing character chat and companion AI become. The social consequences are just beginning, and 2026 is the year of the first lawsuits and first regulations. We are standing at the starting line of the loneliness industry.
