That lag produces much of the resentment in an engineering career. This post separates positioning from skill, explains why narrowing increases rather than reduces opportunity, argues that the raw material of positioning is a class of problems rather than a stack, and names the four costs that leak quietly when you cannot describe yourself in one sentence.
