Negotiating When You Feel You Have No Leverage — What Is Actually on the Table

What stops most people from negotiating is not missing information but a self-issued verdict that they have no leverage — a verdict produced by defining leverage narrowly as one competing offer. This post locates where leverage actually comes from, splitting it into replacement cost, information, time, and alternatives, and inventories what sits on the table besides the number. It explains why serial asks erode trust, why a conditional acceptance hands the other side a reason to go get approval, and what you lose besides money by taking the first proposal as given. It contains no figures and no market rates, and says plainly that these norms differ by market. Part 4 of the Career Moves series.
