Decentralized & Federated Social Networks 2026 — Mastodon / Bluesky / Nostr / Lemmy / Pixelfed / PeerTube / Misskey / Sharkey / Threads (ActivityPub) Deep-Dive

The social-network map of 2026 can no longer be drawn as "Twitter, Facebook, Instagram." Twitter became X, and the people who left scattered across three different protocols — Mastodon, Bluesky, and Nostr. The Reddit IPO and the 2023 API price hike grew Lemmy and Mbin. Pixelfed fills the Instagram gap, PeerTube the YouTube gap, and Meta's Threads is slowly joining ActivityPub through 2024-25. In Japan, Misskey.io is now the single largest Fediverse instance, while Sharkey and Iceshrimp.NET inherit its fork ecosystem. Calckey/Firefish died in 2024. This article walks the entire decentralized-social map of 2026 in one sitting: the three protocols (ActivityPub / AT Protocol / Nostr), each network's founder, scale, current state, and who should pick what.

Calckey/Firefishは2024年に消えた。

Calckey/Firefish는 2024년에 사라졌다.

Secure Messaging in 2026 — Signal / Matrix Element X / SimpleX / Session / Briar / MLS RFC 9420 Deep Dive

In the spring of 2026, secure messaging no longer fits in one sentence. Signal remains the gold standard, now reinforced by Meredith Whittaker after the September 2024 board reshuffle and by PQXDH for post-quantum forward secrecy. Matrix abandoned its React Native client and rebuilt Element X on a Rust SDK with sliding sync. SimpleX dropped the very idea of user IDs to cut metadata at the source. Session combined the Signal protocol with the Loki/Oxen distributed node network. Briar proved real peer-to-peer that runs without the internet at all, while Cwtch put anonymous group chat on top of Tor. Wire and Threema fortified the enterprise and paid markets, Olvid was acquired by the French government, and AWS shut down the consumer side of Wickr. And above all of that, RFC 9420 MLS established itself as the new standard for group messaging — WhatsApp adopted it, Webex followed, X Premium too. This article walks through every branch of secure messaging in spring 2026.
