How Jazz Was Born — From Congo Square to Kind of Blue

The first legend of jazz, Buddy Bolden, left not a single recording behind, and the band that cut the first jazz record in the world in 1917 was white. New Orleans passed back and forth between France and Spain, Congo Square where African drums could be beaten every Sunday, Creole musicians formally trained in European music, and the 1894 racial statute that pushed them into Black bands — this piece follows sixty years, from the two roots of blues and ragtime through the solos of Louis Armstrong and the bebop revolt to Kind of Blue in 1959. It closes with what a first-time listener should put an ear on, and the order in which to hear a single tune all the way through.

Kind of Blue
