How Characters Change — The Grammar of Character Arc Design

Plot is the order of events; the arc is the change in a person. In a good story the two share the same scenes and push each other forward. Here are the three arcs — the positive one that lets go of a false belief, the negative one that surrenders to it, and the flat one in which the world changes instead of the character — along with the engine that drives them all, the mismatch between want and need. Also: why character is revealed by choice under pressure rather than by description, why backstory should stay hidden, and how foils and antiheroes actually work. A hands-on observation exercise closes the piece.
